I honestly don’t understand those upset with the ending of There Will Be Blood. The entire final sequence (1927) is extraordinary, and the last sentence blew me away.
PT Anderson dedicated the movie to Robert Altman in the film’s final title card, but the ending is vintage Kubrick. That maniacal delivery, that slam-cut, that baroque design of the final scene, and the use of Brahms over the credits. It’s The Godfather mixed with Barry Lyndon with the insanity of A Clockwork Orange. Anderson created a character that spirals out of control and the ending is justifiable with the beginning. Anyone who can’t see this is myopic.
That final sentence - “I’m done here” - will be regarded a classic soon enough. It’s not one of the year’s best, this is one of the best American films ever.
